Graston Technique and IASTYM

The Graston Technique combines the benefits of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) with other treatment techniques to help relieve pain, improve flexibility and performance, and expedite recovery from injuries.

What Is the Graston Technique and IASTM

IASTM is a type of treatment that utilizes various tools to help better mobilize soft tissue structures, such as muscles and fascia. IASTM includes the Graston Technique which uses six stainless steel instruments with rounded edges for injured areas where it stimulates healing by encouraging blood flow in them while also targeting scarring or other obstacles preventing range-of motion from happening naturally.

Popular in the United States, Graston is often used in conjunction with other Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Mobilization (IASTM) methods. The modality is different from other soft tissue strategies because a tool always is used instead of manual pressure or physical stimulation. A stainless-steel instrument is slid over targeted tissue groups, creating controlled micro-abrasions along the fascia. These micro-abrasions break down scar tissue and increase circulation, allowing fascial adhesions to be broken down and allowing soft tissue movement to return.

How the Graston Technique Is Performed

The Graston Technique is a therapy that aims to remove scar tissue by applying stainless steel instruments with lubricant and then moving them across your skin. You may experience temporary redness as result from increased blood flow, warmth of the area being targeted for healing which helps improve mobility overall in those areas affected by it. Your therapist will use instruments to help loosen affected areas and ease pressure on nerve fibers. After your massage, your therapist will discuss home instructions and provide you with a list of exercises to reinforce the positive changes you've made while in treatment.

This is a drug-free alternative to conventional medical treatment for people with soft-tissue injuries. Many of our patients find that regular care enables them to make a full recovery and return to their daily activities. There are a few key reasons that can cause treatment to prove ineffective, keep these in mind to see the full benefits.

  • Only going to one treatment; Patients can feel great improvements in pain after one session, however it is always best to finish a full treatment plan to get the best results.
  • Treatments can have discomfort; patients can feel some discomfort during treatment. Do not stop sessions if they feel too intense, speak with your therapist to find the best intensity for you.
  • Self-treating at home; while the technique seems easy, targeting the wrong areas with the wrong tools can cause more harm than good.

So thankful I was referred here. After many years of painful swelling in my legs and feet, I was referred here. My doctor said they are the only ones in our area doing lymphatic massage. Dr. Bill is confident, knowledgeable, and friendly. The whole staff from the front desk to the therapy floor are friendly, efficient and helpful. They all knew my name from the first day. They had a consultant order a machine, I can use daily at home. I can slip on shoes I haven't been able to in years. Highly recommend this for all kinds of physical therapy. What a great place☆☆☆☆☆

For months after my car accident I felt like I was getting no answers or effective treatment from various doctors. One of them finally referred me to Paradigm for physical therapy and it was a game changer. I left after the first session already feeling improvement. Dr. Bill is excellent. He is determined to help you feel better and offers options for treatment that were not available at my previous PT. The entire staff is amazing as well.
