Relief from Tennis Elbow

At Paradigm Physical Therapy our team can help identify and relieve the source of your elbow pain. Our treatment program uses a combination of different techniques to reduce pain, correct muscle imbalances, and improve strength.

What Is Tennis Elbow?

Tennis elbow is a condition that affects the elbow, wrist, and hand. It occurs when tendons in the elbow become irritated and inflamed.

It's called tennis elbow because it's most common in people who play tennis. However, less than 5% of all cases of tennis elbow occur in people who play the sport. The cause is not completely understood but repeated use of the affected arm is commonly involved.

Signs/Symptoms of Tennis Elbow

The most common cause of tennis elbow is excessive use. This can happen suddenly when playing sports, lifting weights etc., but it often develops gradually over weeks or months due to repeated stress on your muscles around the wrist and elbow over time.

Symptoms may include:

  • Radiating pain that travels from your elbow to your forearm and wrist.
  • Weakness in the arm wrist or hand
  • Stiff elbow
  • Increased pain with daily activities

A Paradigm Physical Therapist team member will ask about your symptoms and medical history. They will also test your range of motion and muscle strength. If they suspect you have tennis elbow, they may order an X-ray or MRI to rule out other conditions. Once a diagnosis is confirmed, we will develop a treatment plan. This may include exercises, stretches, and physical therapy modalities such as ultrasound or electrical stimulation. The goal of treatment is to reduce pain and inflammation, improve range of motion, and strengthen the muscles around the elbow. With time and proper treatment, most people with tennis elbow can return to their normal activities without pain.

How To Avoid Reinjury of Tennis Elbow

To avoid reinjury of Tennis Elbow:

  • Allow the tendons to fully heal
  • Continue approved exercise to ensure proper muscle strength and joint mobility is reached.
  • Change repetitive motions in jobs and hobbies if you can

Improperly returning to a sport or activity can cause reinjury and set your elbow pain cycle off again. A physical therapist can make sure your elbow is strong and ready for action, allowing you to make a full recovery.

So thankful I was referred here. After many years of painful swelling in my legs and feet, I was referred here. My doctor said they are the only ones in our area doing lymphatic massage. Dr. Bill is confident, knowledgeable, and friendly. The whole staff from the front desk to the therapy floor are friendly, efficient and helpful. They all knew my name from the first day. They had a consultant order a machine, I can use daily at home. I can slip on shoes I haven't been able to in years. Highly recommend this for all kinds of physical therapy. What a great place☆☆☆☆☆

For months after my car accident I felt like I was getting no answers or effective treatment from various doctors. One of them finally referred me to Paradigm for physical therapy and it was a game changer. I left after the first session already feeling improvement. Dr. Bill is excellent. He is determined to help you feel better and offers options for treatment that were not available at my previous PT. The entire staff is amazing as well.
